EFFECT OF SOME IDENTIFIED FACTORS OF PRODUCTION ON THE LEVEL OF PRODUCTIVITY OF JEY BUILDING TRADESMEN
Abstract
One of the major problems facing the building industry in Nigeria is the inability of management to meet most of the vital condition of labour at work sites, thereby causing low productivity. This study, apart from identifying the factors that cause low productivity explored if there are significant differences on the effect of the identified factors on the level of productivity among the building tradesmen in the study area. The tradesmen of operational level were engaged through both focus interviews and site to site fact findings by the researcher. The data collected formed the background of the structured questionnaire for proper analysis and recommendations. Two hundred and fifteen out of two hundred and fifty questionnaires launched to the ten building sites were properly completed and returned. In order to rank the severity of the factors, a mean score index was employed. The data was analyzed further using one way analysis of variance to determine if there are significant differences on the effect on most significantly affect the site operatives. It further shows that there is no significant difference on the effect of the identified factors on the level productivity among building tradesmen in the study area. The implication is that their outputs are comparable, and it is hereby recommended that further studies should be carried out in the study area to obtain and analyse necessary data using work study technique or other methods for the generation of common building constants to be used for estimating and planning. This is because there is a dearth of information on output levels of building operatives in Nigeria.
