Assessment of Neighbourhood Environment and Urban Housing Quality on Residents’ Health - A Case Study of Nkpor –uno.
Abstract
This study, assessment of neighbourhood environment and urban housing quality on residents’ health was conducted at Nkpor uno in Idemili North local government area of Anambra State. The basic survey research was adopted for the study and the systematic random sampling technique was used in selecting 500 housing units. The questionnaire, observation checklist and interview guide were used in collecting data for this study which were administered personally by the researcher. The assessment showed that there is a direct relationship between neighbourhood environment and urban housing quality on residents’ health. It was therefore concluded that absence of environmental health services and infrastructures were responsible for low level of housing and environmental qualities which greatly influence peoples’ health in the study area. There should be provisions by the government, philanthropists, and landlords for community based environmental health services to ensure sustainable housing and green infrastructural developments. The level of environmental education should be stepped up to increase awareness on community sanitation and adequate solid wastes and domestic waste water management in the area. Sustainable and affordable housing schemes, mortgages and urban renewals should be integrated in government housing policies.
